ACT114A is the latest amendment of the two amendments made to Malaysia's Evidence Act 1950. It is something that affects the Malaysian Internet industry and its users. It deals with harmful content or something that suspected illegal on the Internet. In short, this amendment holds those who accountable for publishing content online.
How would ACT114A affect you?
As a Internet user, if someone hijack or abuse my account, my devices, and WiFi network to publish some illegal or harmful content, they will presume that I'm guilty of publishing those. This means that although I'm the victim, but still I'm considered guilty until I've proven innocent under Section 114A.Therefore, I must always be alert when posting or publishing content on the Internet, especially about those sensitive issues.
Does it really matter?
I think yes. Who knows one day I might be one of the victims of identity theft? Some professional hackers might just get to misuse my WiFi network easily and they might abuse those accounts registered under my name.
Should you be concerned?
Yes, not only me but everyone. In fact, I just get to know about this lately since Aug 14 is the Stop114A Internet Blackout Day. Many of my friends posted about this on the social network like Facebook and Twitter. This amendment threatens the right to freedom of expression as well. As a conclusion, the Internet freedom is very important to all of us.

What you think is what I think too. Just want to give a little opinion, you said " This amendment threatens the right to freedom of expression as well. As a conclusion, the Internet freedom is very important to all of us." It is indeed important to us, but there is always a limit in each of everything. Whether we have this Act or not, we should always aware with our words and language to prevent unnecessary misunderstanding. =)
ReplyDeleteYes, I do agree that there's always a limit in everything but I think we have the rights and should have a place to voice out what we think too. Nowadays many people including those famous people and artists using their blog, Facebook or other social networks as a platform to write about their true thinking and to share what they wanted to share with their friends and other Internet users. Unfortunately there's many who misused it to post something overly. So, one must be responsible on what he have done.
DeleteHi :) I do agree on all your opinions. However, like what Grace said in the above comment where you made your conclusion "internet freedom is very important to all of us," I somehow have a bit to say about it. I agree that we should have internet freedom, but not too much freedom. This is because once people are given unlimited freedom of the internet, many will misuse and abuse it. Then it'll give a tremendous effect to the community as well. If you were to say "it's my life, and I can do anything I want on the internet," then you got to a wrong path already. In internet, everyone in the world can view what we post or write here, and this will definite affect the future generation if they were taught negative stuff as they are still learning :)
ReplyDeleteYes, what I can say is unfortunately there's always "black sheep" in it, some who didn't use the right way or even take advantage of the Internet freedom to do something that shouldn't have been done.
